Rice yield gaps and nitrogen-use efficiency in the Northwestern Indo-Gangetic Plains of India: Evidence based insights from heterogeneous farmers’ practices

چکیده
A large database of individual farmer field data (n = 4,107) for rice production in the Northwestern Indo-Gangetic Plains India was used to decompose yield gaps and investigate scope reduce nitrogen (N) inputs without compromising yields. Stochastic frontier analysis disentangle efficiency resource gaps, whereas on potential region were retrieved from Global Yield Gap Atlas estimate technology gap. Rice small (ca. 2.7 t ha?1, or 20% yield, Yp) mostly attributed gap 1.8 ca. 15% Yp). Efficiency negligible (less than 5% Yp most districts). Small associated with high input use, particularly irrigation water N, which responses observed. N partial factor productivity (PFP-N) 45–50 kg grain kg?1 fields efficient management approximately lower inefficient management. Improving PFP-N appears be best achieved through better matching rates variety types cultivated by adjusting amount urea applied 3rd split correspondance diammonium-phosphate earlier season. Future studies should assess broaden assessment presented here other indicators at cropping systems level.

Simulation of Nitrogen Balance in Rice–Wheat Systems of the Indo-Gangetic Plains
Crop growth simulation models provide a means to quantify the effects of climate, soil, and management on crop growth and biogeochemical processes in soil. The Denitrification and Decomposition (DNDC) model was evaluated for its ability to simulate N dynamics and balance in the rice (Oryza sativa L.)–wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cropping systems in the Indo-Gangetic Plains with various N and wa...
متن کاملAssessment of impact of climate change on potato and potential adaptation gains in the Indo-Gangetic Plains of India
India is the second largest producer of potato in the world. The Indo-Gangeticplains (IGP) is the main potato growing region accounting for almost 85% of the1.8 Mha under the crop in India where it is grown as an irrigated crop during thewinter season. Since IGP is in sub-tropical plains, duration of the thermally suitablewindow is the main determinant limiting yields. Hence the impact of clima...
متن کاملDeterminants and Farm- Level Impacts of Labour Outmigration in the Indo-Gangetic Plains of India
Inter-state migration in search of livelihood is an important feature of the Indian economy. The direction of migration is determined by the direction of the inequality. Rural-urban migration is a mechanism of adjustment by an individual or group to development gaps created between the dynamic industrial sector in urban/peri-urban areas and the more inert agricultural sector in rural areas (Gue...
متن کاملSpatial and Temporal Variability of Fog Over the Indo-Gangetic Plains, India
The aim of the paper is to analyze the characteristics of winter fog in terms of its trend and spatial-temporal variability over Indo-Gangetic plains. The study reveals that during last four and half decades (1971-2015), an alarming increasing trend in fog frequency has been observed during the winter months of December and January over the study area. The frequency of fog has increased by 118....
